World Trade Center Bangalore (Also known as North Star) is a 32 floors tall building in Rajajinagar, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Presently it is the tallest building in Bangalore. Today, Infosys is recognized globally as a company with one of the best infrastructure. It all started with a dream – of having our own campus in Bangalore. In 1992, the Karnataka government allocated four acres of land in Electronics City, Bangalore to us. It had a challenging terrain and poor accessibility and entailed a cost of 17.22 crore when our revenues for fiscal 1992 was only 8.66 crore. This didn't deter us and an IPO was floated to raise funds for building the campus. It was to have a built up area of 1,60,000 sq. ft., with a capacity to seat 1,000 people, low cost yet elegant, modern yet traditional. It was completed in 11 months, with Murthy overseeing the project himself. It soon became the most visited corporate campus in India, with over 70 heads of state and global politic...

The artist couple Pratibha and Sanjay Singh have a nice earth based ecological home along with a studio for Sanjay as part of the home. The whole house is of earth excavated from the site. There is no plastering or painting for the building. The house is naturally lit and naturally ventilated with no fan or air conditioning. Sanjay is an avid gardener and we josh about his North Indian garden. Harvested rain supplies the garden water and adds to the house hold use. Grey water from the kitchen is reused for the garden. One of my dream is to go take a looooong afternoon nap in the peace and quite of this beautiful home designed by the Architect Chitra Vishwanath (seen in the silent movie with the artist Sanjay Singh). Note also the paintings by the artist couple, stunning an in tune with th...
ITPL stands for International Tech Park (India) Ltd. This is a collection of high rises which house a large number of IT professionals (my estimate is over 50,000) spread across different IT companies (and several non-IT companies). Although this is not the only collection of IT offices in Bangalore, it certainly seems the largest. It was a treat to visit some of the brands that we work with on a daily basis.

The Vidhana Soudha, located in Bengaluru (Bangalore), is the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka. It is an imposing building, constructed in a style sometimes described as Mysore Neo-Dravidian,and incorporates elements of Indo-Saracenic and Dravidian styles. The construction was completed in 1956. Kengal Hanumanthaiah is credited with the conception and construction of the Vidhana Soudha. The foundation was laid by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on July 13, 1951. However it was Kengal Hanumanthaiah who was instrumental in the redesign and speedy construction of Vidhana soudha. He visited Europe, Russia, United States and other places and got the idea of building Vidhana Soudha by incorporating various designs from the buildings he had seen. It was completed in 1...

Ecological architecture responds to 2 key crises confronting us globally. The crisis of poverty and the lack of access to work, education, health and all allied services is the first one. The second is the environmental crisis with the consumption of natural resources beyond sustainable limits and the generation of pollution streams beyond the carrying capacity of the globe itself. Through design and through the architecture of space work is generated to produce jobs of a skill which is nurturing thus addressing the first concern. The second concern is addressed through building to enhance bio-diversity , using local materials such as earth, harvesting rain, using solar energy, using ecosan, recycling grey water, growing food on the roof and being as creative as possible in minimizing the ec...

Innovative film city is about 60 kms from Bangalore on Mysore road. The place is a full package of entertainment. As the video became too long I preferred to split into parts. This part shows the entrance of film city, the ticket counter and some amusements items like bow and arrow shooting, gun shooting etc. It was a great fun to shoot arrows together in competition. The gun shooting was even more interesting, although I doubt any of us would have hit the target. But the guns were producing enormous sounds. There is one "innovative studio" inside the innovative film city. Innovative studio has several interesting places for film shooting purposes. There was a police station and guns (fake items for shooting only). We did good hungama inside the police station. While I was going inside a...

A high-speed bullet train connecting Bangalore and Chennai in only 1 hour and 15 minutes! This WEBEO explores the possibilities of a high speed railway line between South India’s two most prominent cities: Bangalore and Chennai. Despite their relative proximity and economic ties, no high-speed rail currently connects the two cities. The fastest train (Shatabdi) takes 5 hours between the two cities. The bullet train will reduce travel time between the two cities by approximately 75% to only 1 hour and 15 minutes. The high-speed railway line will mostly be built parallelly to the existing railway between the two cities, minimizing disruption both to transportation and the alignment’s surroundings. However, a 38-kilometre viaduct between Bangarapet and Vaniyambadi, as well as a 44-kilometre...

“Can you ‘see’ IIMB as a building? It is not visible because nature has taken over so you see a wall here, a pillar there. It has scale and density but also porosity. What is architecture? What does it really mean? When we ‘inhabit’ a space (consciously), architecture becomes the body to our soul. Then it is alive…it can talk to us,” said Dr. BV Doshi who designed the IIM Bangalore building and many others but most importantly, he shaped the way architecture is taught in India.
